A series of earthquakes near Kardhitsa destroyed Fourna Alestia and Krenti leaving hundreds homeless. One 30 year old mother of six died in the collapse while more than 50 were injured and a state of emergency was declared with army rescue teams and tents dispatched.
President Johnson flies to Hawaii to assess the war and announce stepped up American aid to Vietnamese villages. He said at a Friday news conference that he will outline three measures to boost health education and farm assistance for the Vietnamese people.
A military spokesman says the U S 1st Air Cavalry Division assault near Saigon has grown into the war’s largest American operation. The report notes substantial reinforcements, a multi brigade force of 15 000 to 20 000 allied troops, and significant Communist casualties across several fronts. AP reports President Johnson will land in Honolulu on Sunday making him the first U S president to visit Hawaii since it became the 50th state. Eisenhower proclaimed statehood on August 21 1959, and neither he nor Kennedy visited as president. several presidents visited Hawaii while it was a territory.
Police say James A. Pike Jr., 22, son of Protestant Episcopal Bishop James A. Pike of California, shot himself in a Manhattan Hudson Hotel room. The death note was left and a 30-30 rifle was found with the body. The bishop learned of the death after a delay and described the loss as puzzling and tragic.
Willie Myrick, 38, was shot to death in an argument at a woman's apartment in South Bend. Bertha Newman, 31, was held for investigation of homicide.
United Press International notes the Library of Congress preserves more than 12 million books and pamphlets in its national repository, highlighting the vast scope of its printed heritage and research material.
In Tokyo harbor an All Nippon Airways Boeing 727 with 133 aboard crashed during landing Friday night. Flowers were dropped by relatives from a small freighter as rescue crews searched through the night. The jet, en route from the snow festival on Hokkaido, carried 126 passengers and crew. about 100 bodies remained missing eighteen hours after the crash.
Moscow AP reports lunar photographs sent by the Soviet Union were shown to newspaper readers almost everywhere except the USSR. Soviet officials kept pictures from public view while papers ran headlines such as Dream Coming True and We'll Be Seeing You with continuation noted on page 2 column 3.
