A Japanese airliner carrying 133 people crashed into Tokyo Bay on Friday night. ANA said two rescue boats recovered three bodies and found no survivors. The three engine Boeing 727 operated by All-Nippon Airways is reported as the carrier.
Three Terre Haute men pleaded guilty to burglary and theft in a regional ring. Charles Newberry, David Niswonger, and James Osborn drew 1 to 10 year terms concurrent and parole eligibility in one year. Loot valued around $5,000 was recovered. defendants to be sent to Menard Prison after Crawford County jail hold.
Soviet Luna 9, a mechanical moon pioneer, sent pictures of the lunar surface to Earth. Tass announced the transmission was from the surface on command and that sunlight powers its batteries for multiple shots. The craft landed in the Ocean of Storms and weighs about 3,000 pounds.

A 20-year-old rural Terre Haute man William Edward Wood was captured minutes after attempting to rob the home of Assistant Detective Gene Butts at 501 College Ave. The gun used was a toy pistol. Barbara Butts, 35, the officer's wife, alerted police after the door was knocked and the suspect claimed car trouble. Wood admitted hoping to steal money to buy auto licenses and pay bills, saying he had watched the Butts residence for days. Police rounded him up near the scene and notified detectives Jim Graham and Chet Wham. He reportedly had no prior criminal record. Continued on Page 10.
U S jets struck the North with growing intensity as two more planes were reported missing and a helicopter went down in South Vietnam. The resumption of air attacks has left five jets downed in five days. Ground fighting in the south dwindled to light sporadic clashes with Viet Cong.

Senator Birch Bayh Jr will be the guest speaker at the Annual Junior Chamber of Commerce Awards dinner in the Terre Haute House Mayflower Room. Four Jaycee awards will honor good government best boss outstanding citizen and distinguished citizen. Ted Moore will receive the physical fitness honor. The distinguished service award goes to a 21 to 35 year old nonmember. Jaycees meet Friday with Lawrence Jones to discuss Seventh District. They aim to raise 25000, pledging 10 percent, via The Industrious Dozen fund drive.
