A crowded Miami Beach cafeteria fire injures 125 or more, many elderly patrons suffer cuts and burns. Police say a suspected arsonist walked in carrying a container and is being questioned, with no charges yet filed. Fire occurred shortly before 11 p.m. EST at the Concord Cafeteria.
Democratic legislators in Indiana criticized Gov Otis Bowen tax package as confusing after line by line caucus review. House and Senate actions included passage of several bills while a death penalty measure survived an amendment and Bowen held his first news conference as governor.
In Eagle Grove Iowa rescuers recovered a body after a massive explosion and fire in a three building complex, with 13 people unaccounted for. A woman’s body was found in the Chat terbox Café wreckage where nine patrons and five employees were believed present. Authorities linked the blast to a natural gas leak and searched through tons of debris as cranes worked. Continuous fire hindered early searches.

An Indianapolis couple, Arthur O. Conger aged 63 and Lorena Conger aged 59, died Friday night when their camper truck collided with a semi hauling farm machinery on I 70 near U S 41. The truck belonged to Riese and Thomm Diamond Transportation System of Monroe Wisconsin.

Washington AP reports the Navy will discharge about 3000 sailors by month end under a Dec 26 directive by Adm Elmo Zumwalt Jr. The program allows voluntary discharge with at least one year served and preliminary records showing marginal performance or conduct. Discharges are general but not necessarily eligible for reenlistment benefits.
