Levee Strengthened as Wabash River Rises Toward Crest
West Terre Haute volunteers and penitentiary inmates sandbagged the Sugar Creek end of the levee as the Wabash River crested forecast to reach 22.5 feet by Monday. Officials warned 24 feet could threaten weak spots while clear skies renewed hope for hold. Upstate evacuation began near the Maumee River with about 100 families possibly displaced.

Man Killed In N 13th St Accident
The first traffic fatality of the year for Terre Haute occurred at 13th St and 3rd Ave at 3 50 a m Saturday. E F Grizzel 50 of 2419 Locust St died after colliding with Edward L Neidrich 28 of 53 Judith Lane who was uninjured. Grizzel died of internal and head injuries. Police investigated. Both cars were total losses. Neidrich not held. Grizzel body to Thomas Funeral Home. Traffic deaths mounted with other Indiana fatalities including Terry L Edwards 7 Lafayette and Sue Kelly 18 Cincinnati.
