A new cold wave threatens Indiana with sub zero readings from north to south with central areas 0 to 5 above. Forecasters warn of continued frigid temperatures through Sunday with minimal recovery and a likely extended winter, despite Groundhog Day forecasts.
Rescue teams combed charred wreckage for victims after a mid air collision in Ankara caused two planes to crash into the crowded main square. The disaster killed 79 total with 62 on the ground and left nearly 200 injured. Five Americans perished including Paul Dragnic a Fulbright student from Nashville and son of a Vanderbilt professor.

INDIANAPOLIS Feb 2 The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen won freedom from a federal judge to renew its strike against the Monon Railroad. The judge lifted the restraining order and denied Monon’s request for a temporary injunction. The court cited lack of jurisdiction due to failure to submit the dispute to arbitration. All Monon operations were shut down last Sunday.
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow atop Gobbler’s Knob at 7 41 am confirming six more weeks of winter. President Sam Light and 40 club members trudged through snow to hear the prognostication and attend a day of festivities including a breakfast, banquet, and teen dance.
A federal jury in Miami awarded 215 320 to four Capehart grandchildren for their parents deaths in the Avianca crash at Montego Bay Jamaica on July 21 1960 The plaintiffs alleged airline negligence and the case was pursued by H Earl Capehart and the Indiana National Bank as estate administrators The awards ranged from 50875 to 57175 to four children of Thomas and Nancy Capehart
A 52 year old man, Odel Butler, was injured when he fell into a snowblower while clearing Depot Street Friday. He died at Elyria Memorial Hospital about 90 minutes after the accident.
Former Hoosier businessman Benjamin Paul Grove of Crawfordsville Ind was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of his mother in law Carrie Hansen 71. A jury of five men and seven women recommended life imprisonment for Grove deliberating 3 1 2 hours. Prosecutors said he arranged Hansen s body at the bottom of a stairway to fake an accident. Grove pleaded innocent and not responsible by reason of mental illness the defense claimed Hansen fell to her death.
State police report 74 traffic deaths in Indiana during January 1962. The January total is six more than last year but well below the postwar peak of 113 in 1951, marking the lowest January figure in 14 years.
The Navy awarded Magnavox Corp of Fort Wayne Indiana a $1.9 million contract for underwater sound detection devices. Announcement came Friday via Senators Hartke and Bayh of Indiana.

Luis Humberto Oros a 43 year old from Mexico City testifies about his arrival in July 1961 to work on a Middlefield chicken farm owned by David I Shackney. Shackney faces nine counts of peonage and involuntary servitude with possible penalties up to five years and $5000 per count.

Harry P. Stenthouse Sr. longtime Terre Haute Tribune employee, known as the grand old man of the composing room, died Friday afternoon at his home. Funeral services are set for Monday at 8:30 a.m. at the Ryan chapel with a 9:00 a.m. high mass at St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Calvary cemetery. He retired in 1961 after a 61 year career and was honored by the Terre Haute Typographical Union Local 76.
Vern Gibson of the Gibson Service Company explains that if garbage is placed with trash in the same container it must be wrapped, while loose garbage may be set out in a separate container. The aim is not a mandatory wrap rule but to follow health guidelines to reduce maggot infestation and protect containers in cold weather, speeding up service.
In Hannover Germany on February 20 two trains collided head on after the Hannover Linden train ran a stop signal. Three people died and 19 were injured. The German Railways attributed the accident to the signal violation.
King Paul and Queen Frederika of Greece arrived in New Delhi today for a 12 day royal tour of India. They will visit major cities and meet leaders during the trip starting this month.
