Marion Hotel Bellhop Saves Guests From Fire

Husband Finds His Wife Slain in Los Angeles

In Los Angeles on a Tuesday, Barbara Jean Jepson 18, an expectant mother, was found slain in her bedroom by her husband who returned from work. A bent butcher knife was buried in her chest and police reported no sign of a struggle as they hunted a youth suspect.

Police probe restaurant robbery at Goodie Shop

Chief of Detectives Willard Gantz says a full scale inquiry is under way after Tuesday’s safe robbery at the Goodie Shop, 666 Ohio Street, where more than 10000 dollars was taken by at least three men described as top professionals. The motive involved a hidden overhead restroom enclosure and a rear door entry leading to a 25 foot move of the safe.

Snow spreads across the state this afternoon with continued snow and mixed precipitation, followed by cold highs around 28 to 35 degrees and lows near 22 to 34.

Additional Snow Begins Moving Into Indiana

A new snowstorm moved into Indiana from the west with forecasters predicting two to five inches of snow by tonight and a chance of freezing rain and sleet. Northern and central Indiana could see up to five inches, with two inches possible in the south. freezing rain may affect central Indiana. Farther north, South Bend reports six inches of snow, and Fort Wayne 7 degrees. Temperatures tonight may fall to 24 to 30 with a rise to 29 to 40 Thursday.

Indiana Traffic Toll Ahead of 1955

Indiana's 1956 traffic toll is far ahead of a year ago State Police reported. Through midnight Sunday 92 persons had died in highway accidents, 23 more than the same period in 1955. Police noted 73 deaths occurred in rural areas and 19 in cities and towns.

Rejected Lover Held In Slaying Of Nurse In Boston

Charles Atwood Jr. 21 of East Bridgewater was arrested for the murder of Rose Marie Da Silva 18 Brockton a nurse shot dead outside the Massachusetts Memorial Hospital nurses home after she rejected him. Atwood told police he pursued her for about an hour and a half before firing multiple shots. He had been discharged from the Army for a nervous condition after Korea service.

Era Ends as Last Steam Passenger Train Leaves Denver

In a snowbound departure at Union Station at 6 01 p m yesterday Union Pacific No 86 to Omaha made the last steam powered passenger run. The railroad shifts its Denver passenger service to diesel electric power. The first frontier locomotive arrived June 14 1870.

A secret voting plan for Saturday was protested by members who felt the process was rushed. Assassination Plot Trial Moves Through Day Three

Indianapolis February 1. Richard G Marks faces a third day of trial for a plot to kill Prosecutor John G Tinder. Witness Ernie Sandlin testified that Marks boasted of a chance to make big money by slaying the Marion county prosecutor and described Tinder as a young punk some of my friends want to get rid of. Earlier, Richard Parker testified he posed as a hoodlum to trap the defendant and quoted Marks outlining the method to kill Tinder in a cab ride and driveway setup.

P A National Guard commander killed in P-51 crash near Bloomington

Lt. Col. Lee J. Merkel 35 of Louisville, commander of the 123rd Fighter-Interceptor Wing at Standiford Field, died when his P-51 disintegrated and crashed about 12 miles south of Bloomington Indiana. Wreckage scattered over a half mile with parts buried up to four feet.
