The Associated Press reports a sharp rise in traffic deaths during the extended Christmas weekend. Through 6 p.m. Thursday 282 people have died in crashes, with hazardous roads from snow and ice. In the past 24 hours the count exceeded 230, well above the usual daily 120. The National Safety Council projects 560 to 660 deaths by midnight Sunday as the 78 hour holiday ends.
