U S and South Vietnamese troops joined Communist forces in a 24 hour Christmas truce starting 6 p m Christmas Eve. The lull followed a three day Viet Cong standdown and a spike in attacks that killed at least three Vietnamese and left 66 wounded. Four GIs died after stepping on a mine during patrols near Saigon. Military says only minor violations occurred while B 52s pressed attacks on borders with Laos and Cambodia.
In San Francisco two women from a peace group released the names of 132 American POWs after a two week visit to Hanoi They held a news conference and said 138 letters from prisoners were mailed home The released names include Mark Gartley Paul Gordon Brown and Bill Mayhew with others not named in full.
