Seventeen Men Rescued From Tunnel and Fatal Collision
Seventeen men emerged safe from a Tehachapi mountain tunnel after a cave-in near Gorman California. In Terre Haute Indiana an 18 year old James Edward Johnson died when his car was struck by a fleeing driver Ronald Johnson who ran a red light at 13th and Chestnut Streets. The pursuing driver is detained and faces charges of speeding reckless driving and eluding police.

Sandbaggers Save Levee as Sugar Creek Flood Eases
Sugar Creek between West Terre Haute and Toadhop surged with rain, but about 150 volunteers and officials reinforced the levee, halting a major flood threat. The dike broke in eight places yet sandbags kept pace in darkness with help from Red Cross Salvation Army inmates and local agencies. Sixteen roads flooded and river level rose to 18.2 feet, while crews and trucks hauled sandbags and timbers to the site.

Missing Marine Gives Self Up
A Hoosier Marine accused of desertion who came to Florida with a youth found murdered near Bunnell surrendered Thursday at Camp Pendleton California Marine Corps officials said Harold Wayne Sterling 19 Odon was surrendered by his father.
