Atlas ICBM launches from Cape Canaveral mark space race milestone
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla Dec 17 The Air Force successfully launched an Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile in a limited range test traveling several hundred miles and landing in a pre selected target area. The 100 ton weapon roared skyward at 12 38 pm and disappeared into a cloud layer within a minute of launch. The Atlas designed to deliver a hydrogen warhead to 5000 miles away in about 30 minutes would reach 600 miles altitude for maximum range. Officials called this a limited range test as Eisenhower and NATO leaders met in Paris. The Atlas engines deliver 270000 pounds thrust, marking a US response to Soviet ICBM claims. Pulling power fails Wright in court
Walter E.
