Omaha police questioned two men in the murder of Carolyn Marie Nevins, a University of Omaha beauty queen. A 35-year-old former cab driver and a 26-year-old Black man faced lie detector tests as investigators pursue a sex slayings lead.
Two masked robbers held jeweler Joseph Fodor and his wife Nellie captive in their Aurora home overnight and looted the shop of about 55 000 dollars in jewelry plus 400 dollars cash. Fodor described the break in and said the pair knew his inventory and warned about higher insurance. The couple freed themselves and notified police.
Moscow radio announced that the promised reduction of the Soviet armed forces by 640000 men, pledged in August, has now been completed.
President Eisenhower met with Republican congressional leaders for an all day briefing on the administration’s 1956 legislative program. He is recuperating from a heart attack but showing fatigue as he plans a State of the Union message and a bipartisan briefing on foreign policy and security.
Ruth Mary Hillin 26 of Columbus faces court on a kidnapping count for allegedly taking 13 month old Georgia Carol Waltz. The child was found on a Louisville bound bus with Hillin after a tip, and was later returned to her mother Evelyn McLaughlin.
A light snow fell in Sylvania Georgia today marking the first snowfall in more than twenty years. The precip began after 8 a.m. and continued with ground only partly covered an hour later.
Mrs Goebel Duncan of Henderson County Kentucky sat in Gibson County Circuit Court as the state sought to convict Leslie Irvin of another murder. She was joined by four brothers of her slain son and by Dorris Goebel husband of one victim. Irvin faces charges for the robbery killing of Wesley Kerr at an Evansville filling station on December 23. The state presented a bullet said to be Kerrs lethal wound.
Frosty readings across Indiana dipped below freezing with Lafayette at nine degrees and Indianapolis at 1. Evansville logged 15 while Fort Wayne and South Bend reached 18 and 20. Skies were clear but smoke reduced downtown visibility. Temperatures were to rise to near 32 this afternoon and fall to 15 to 20 tonight. Maj. Gen. Frank D. Merrill 53 longtime New Hampshire public works and highways commissioner died Sunday night of a heart attack in Fernandina Beach Florida. The World War II jungle fighter led Merrill’s Marauders behind Japanese lines in the Pacific and was returning from a conference in New Orleans when stricken at a motel with State Highway Engineer Richard Burnell and their wives.
