Senate tax spokesmen signaled likely passage of an excess profits tax bill after the House approved its version to tax wartime corporate profits. The measure retroacts to July 1, aiming to raise about 3.4 billion dollars this year and 4.6 billion in future years.
President Truman and Prime Minister Attlee held their third meeting in Washington to press an urgent drive to boost production and maximize scarce raw materials for the United States and Britain. A working party was set up to pursue the matter as talks continued with a session scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and Attlee addressing the National Press Club.
Fifteen thousand Marines and infantrymen broke from the Chinese encirclement at Hagaru and moved toward Kotori seven miles south on a snow covered plateau. British commandos and U.S. regiments joined the dash as the 1st Marine Division led the bid for freedom amid mounting casualties. The U.S. 8th Army halted its sprint near the 38th parallel and prepared to counter moves toward Pyongyang.
Evansville Indiana December 6 A farm wife amputated her husband Gilbert Hartig s mangled leg with a butcher knife to save his life after his trousers leg tangled in a corn harvester. Neighbors aided and doctors at St Mary s Hospital said he likely would recover.
Michigan City Ind Dec 6 Franklin Click plans a new plea for a stay of execution arguing his confession to murder was to escape brutality and to secure rewards for his family. The 30 year old Fort Wayne laborer on death row for the 1944 Fort Wayne sex murder of Phyllis Conine admits killing two other Fort Wayne women and faces a Dec 30 execution. He told his lawyer Robert A Buhler of Fort Wayne that the stay petition will rest on the confession. He must file for Indiana Supreme Court rehearing by Friday. Click was convicted Dec 1 1949 and the Supreme Court upheld Nov 16. He said the killings could have earned life and hoped his confession would ensure a payout to his wife and children totaling 16500.
In Fulton Missouri a head on collision on Highway 54 killed Sammy Brown 24 of Charleston Indiana and Mrs. Kenneth Wood 31 of New Bloomfield Missouri. The Indianapolis boxing team manager Tom Leeper 47 and four other teammates were injured. the team was bound for Wichita Kansas for a boxing show.
Muncie Indiana December 6 a grand jury indicted Dr Jules La Duron 57 on two counts of manslaughter for the November 6 shooting in his office that killed Ralph Carter 35 and his brother Siebert 27 formerly of Terre Haute The jury did not indict La Durons son Jaco 21 who was jailed three weeks then released The doctor said Carter had been blackmailing him alleging an illegal operation Police said a fight preceded the shooting La Duron remained jailed awaiting arraignment with bail possible and manslaughter carries 2 to 21 years in Indiana law Continued on Page 2 Column 7.
Another 30 Vigo county men will be drafted into the United States Army Thursday, Dec. 14, per directive from state headquarters at the Selective Service office in the Federal Building. Fifty county men were inducted a week ago.
A massive snow and cold spell swept the central United States with readings down to 20 below in the Dakotas and sub-zero in Nebraska Iowa and Kansas. Snow covered more than 1200 miles from north of Lake Superior to Arkansas and 400 miles from Iowa to northwestern Ohio with Duluth reporting 12 inches and Minneapolis 11. Chicago recorded 2 inches of wet snow as the blast moved eastward and southward.
Rain and wet snow raise water on the Wabash River in Vigo County, measured six tenths of a foot above lowland flood stage. Crest past Lafayette reached on Tuesday. A low of 18 is forecast tonight, with a 40 degree high today and a 10 above zero low Thursday night. No precipitation expected through Saturday. Illinois to the west is already snowing, with two to three inches on the ground in places. Terre Haute reports rain melting most snow.

The Auto License Bureau at Eighth and Cherry streets closed all day as state accountants audit Lawrence V. Letzkus the retiring Democrat director and verify Jess E. Monroe the Republican successor. The auditing team operates under A. E. Stedman of the state auto division.
The Duke of Windsor landed in New York aboard the Queen Elizabeth and was greeted by his wife Wallis Warfield Simpson. They laughed at reports of estrangement as the royal couple shared affectionate moments.
Lloyd Kruzan aged 32 of 2416 South Third Street suffered severe burns when his truck caught fire after colliding with a second truck and trailer at Capital Avenue and South Street. He was reported in fair condition at Methodist Hospital with head lacerations and burns. Olin Riddle, 20, of Berea Kentucky, driver of the other truck, was uninjured and helped extinguish flames. Kruzan's vehicle left the road, hit a pole, and the wreck tied up traffic for two hours. Riddle’s 17 ton cardboard load had to be removed to right his truck. Kruzan is married with three children.

Rain and snow mix this evening with snow and colder conditions tonight. Thursday brings more snow and colder weather. Highs reach the low to mid thirties, with lows near the teens to upper twenties in various areas. Temperature readings show a 2 pm high around 41 and morning around 34.
The AP reports 18 nations have offered troops to join the U.N. force in Korea. Britain has about 10,000 troops with naval support, Turkey 4,500 ground forces, Greece 5,000 with 1,000 aboard a navy transport, and Canada leading outside the U.S. with an advance party of 350 and about 1,000 more to sail.
At Lake Success the U N Assembly voted 51 to 5 to place a six nation plea to halt Chinese intervention on its emergency program. Vishinsky dismissed the appeal and urged withdrawal of U N forces from Korea. He called MacArthur a war maniac and blamed the U S for aggression. India abstained on the parallel crossing debate as Western powers pushed a truce plan.
Pope Pius appeals to Roman Catholic bishops and the world to pursue peace during Rome’s 1950 Holy Year. He says the pilgrim influx testifies that people do not want war or hatred but seek unity and Christian love for a better age. He calls for a sacred crusade against unrestrained struggle and casual ties to mankind.
Ronald Bugg broke one leg and then both as a car collided with a truck on the way to hospital. He continued to the hospital in an ambulance with two broken legs.
