A Trans World Airlines Constellation bound from Bombay to Rome crashed and burned north of Cairo. Fifty five people died, including 23 Americans and five crew members. The Star of Maryland wreckage was found in the Nile Delta near Etay Baroud.
North Korean forces launched a major assault aimed at Haman and Masan on the Masan front. U S forces reported heavy fighting across the southwest front with tanks and artillery leading the attack and possible second division involvement north of Masan.
Charles Willis 52 is killed in his Heltonville poolroom as Mrs Charlotte Evelyn Martin 42 is shot near the couch. Glen Martin 45, husband of the injured woman, later confessed at the mortuary and disappeared. Mrs Martin survived and identified her husband. The trio had started their noisy spree last Saturday and Willis and Mrs Martin had paid fines for disorderly conduct. They have three children.
The Seattle Port of Embarkation reported 108000 cigars en route west for G I s in Korea. War correspondent Hal Boyle noted smokes were scarce and shared like letters from home. The Red Cross funded all but 7500 of the shipment, with Newark New Jersey and Tampa Florida adding 3000 more.
Great Lakes Ill Aug 31 two Indiana soldiers Sagt. Frederick Slovenski of Gary and Pvt Donald E Matthews of Muncie were among 33 who arrived at Great Lakes Naval Hospital yesterday for treatment of wounds suffered in Korea.
Cloudy and windy with rain tonight in Terre Haute and vicinity. Rain heavy at times with cooler followed by partly cloudy conditions Friday. Indiana forecast calls for more rain and wind this afternoon and tonight with heavy rains in south and east central portions. Illinois to see rain east and south this afternoon ending tonight with warmer Friday. Temperature readings show 69 at 9 am and 77 at 2 pm.

Saddle horse show begins Sunday with Tex Beneke orchestra. Traffic plans include police and airborne observers to manage crowds.
Mrs. Rob ert Long of 915 South Fifth street receives the Orchid for Safety for pushing a stalled automobile with her own car at the Seventh street and Wabash avenue intersection. Officers A. Long and Bealmer commended her for helping traffic move more smoothly.

Five year old David Blucher, missing since Saturday, was found dead near a Lake Tomahawk dock in Rhinelander Wisconsin. Sheriff and coroner ordered autopsy to determine cause of death. Father arrived from Amsterdam to identify the body as hundreds searched by land air and water.
Berlin August 31 Die Welt reports that Russians and the Soviet zone government have reached a peace treaty accord. The document would be a lever to push western allies from Berlin, though other sources could not confirm the report and U.S. intelligence said they have no knowledge of it.
A U S military mission arrived in Lisbon from London to discuss alignment of Portugal's army and navy with other Atlantic Pact nations. The visit aims to coordinate integration with NATO allies and ensure interoperability across services.
New York archbishop Christopher, ranking primate of the Alexandrine Greek Orthodox Church in the United States, died last night after collapsing in his rectory in the Bronx. He was 56 and had been hospitalized after his illness.
The late season hurricane struck the northwest Florida Gulf coast, bringing 100 mph winds and extensive property damage estimated over 500000 dollars. Panama City suffered 100000 to 300000 dollars in damage with roads, communications and dwellings affected across the state, while Alabama crops were hit on its storm path. A second hurricane was looming near the Leeward Islands as the system moved north toward the Great Lakes region.
The National Safety Council projected a Labor Day weekend toll of 435 highway deaths over 78 hours from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday as 36 million cars flood streets and highways. Previous highs were 410 last year and 428 in 1937, with total holiday deaths reaching 550.
Mrs. Gertrude Grachenia Conrad joined her husband Sgt. Robert Conrad in Logansport after their June Vienna wedding. The Defense Department reported the 27 year old soldier killed in action in Korea, ending a brief reunion.
Washington Aug 31 A Senate House conference committee sought final details of a broad anti inflation bill to speed it to President Truman before his national address. The plan would grant the president expanded powers for home front mobilization and the economy. Truman asked Congress for 60 million dollars to begin administering the new powers. The committee approved a modified Senate provision to allow creation of special machinery to handle labor disputes tied to national defense.
All banks and savings and loan associations in the city will be closed Monday for Labor Day. Those needing banking services should conduct business before noon Saturday to avoid disruption.

Sgt 1st Class John Yettman and Otis White were also noted among Indiana reserves with White to undergo a physical exam.
U P reports rapid allied gains up to two miles on the west and strong hold on the north as Naktong front erupts with artillery and ground assaults. Robert Bennyhoff notes three miles of advance around Pohang in two days and that the No 2 port and adjacent airstrip remain in allied hands despite stubborn resistance.

In Mehlsdorf Bavaria a family eating mushrooms heard a howling from under the table. Their cat had eaten some mushrooms minutes before and now the family rushed to hospital for stomach pumps. They stayed shaken but grateful to the cat as seven new kittens appeared under the table.
Ninety B 29 Superfortresses pounded North Korean war centers with over 600 tons of bombs. Air attacks aimed at Pohang, Seoul bridges, and Chinampo industries, with two American planes lost and pilots rescued or killed.
The 375th Smoke Generating Company, an all colored unit with white officers, departs for active duty. Lieut. Herbert Mason commands the company and its strength and destination are not released. Temporary HQ established in the Hoover Building. The 431st Engineer Dump Truck Company completes physicals and begins active duty September 11 under Capt. Robert W. Pease.
Athens says Russia's Jakob Malik seeks to slander Greece and meddle in its internal matters. Permanent Foreign Undersecretary Politis made the charge in reply to Malik's demand that the UN Security Council address Greece's political executions.
