Washington report notes Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey projects a larger draft than the 185000 authorized citing unsettled world conditions. Indiana officials place November quota at 1450 with 1015 to be drafted in the next seven months and plan 1000 reservists for physicals.
In Korea a force of 98 B-29 bombers struck a 21 square mile area north of Waegwan, dropping 875 tons of bombs. Observers reported the Reds fleeing in panic, with a lull on the ground as U S forces halted a major North Korean offensive along the Naktong. The operation followed by reinforcements for Negro infantry and supported the Taegu counteroffensive.
The draft director outlined plans to call 100000 men in September and October, with 185000 drafted in the year ending June 30. Hershey warned future calls could rise beyond 85000 additional recruits, while defense officials aim to reach about 800000 through draft, reserves, and guards.
Judge H eWitt Owen issued a restraining order delaying a rezoning of land between Thirteenth and Fourteenth streets and Fifth and Sixth avenues. A hearing for a temporary injunction is set for September 29. Kenneth Hayworth 28 of Columbus died when his car collided with a tree along Indiana 46 two and a half miles west of Columbus. The fatality occurred yesterday.
Attorney Herbert R. Gerdink, longtime Avia tion Commission member, declares candidacy for the vacant council seat left by Fen ton Pine. Pine resigned to join the police force. Gerdink was nominated by Pine and is favored by administration over rival Peter Hoffner. Everett states election must occur within 2 to 15 days after vacancy declaration with proper advertising.
The season's first hurricane moves northwest in the open Atlantic at about six miles per hour with winds near 100 mph. It sits roughly 740 miles east of Palm Beach, Florida, as of today, and no storm warnings are in effect along the U.S. coast.

Washington August 16 A National Labor Relations Board examiner refused to dismiss unfair labor practice charges against John L Lewis and the United Mine Workers. The four contested demands cited include memorial work stoppages union shop and welfare fund distributions. A two year contract signed March 5 softened the points and ended the dispute.
The House voted to restore city mail service to two deliveries daily and sent to the Senate a bill ordering the Post Office Department to cancel the April 17 order reducing city home deliveries to one daily. A Senate committee approved a companion bill, though a presidential veto is possible.
Johnnie Earls of 500 Harding Avenue earns the Orchid for Safety after reporting smoke from a car parked at Second and Ohio streets. Officer Douglas Collins praised Earls for alerting police and firefighters, whose quick response stopped a blaze caused by defective wiring.
