The Senate Finance Committee approved an about 3.0 billion dollar annual rise in personal income taxes starting Oct 1. The plan would lift withholding from 15 to 18 percent after exemptions, affecting over 50 million taxpayers.
The army announces 7,862 reserve captains and lieutenants will go on active duty by Oct. 6 for 91 months. It recalls 1,582 officers in medical and related corps. The move affects officers up to major in some corps and spreads across all regions to fill national guard and organized reserve units. The Fifth Army quota totals 394 captains and 1,411 lieutenants with medical and other corps included.
Tank assisted U S and South Korean troops repel Communists threatening Pohang airport as Reds push toward the field. Forces clash near Chinju and Masan as MacArthur reports eroded Communist bridgeheads along the Naktong River with Taegu still at risk.
Two Thorntown girls and two Grant county men died in separate Indiana crashes. Mrs Peggy Theobald and Miss Judith Riggles, both 19, were killed near Crawfordsville, while Charles Morris Jr. and Robert Timmons, aged 40 and 70, died in Indianapolis area collisions. Albert Theobald was critically injured. Bonnie Meek, 49, of Bridgeport, died later from injuries in a bus crash in Indianapolis.
The 38th Indiana National Guard Division winds up 15 days of summer maneuvers with a parade before Governor Schricker. The guardsmen will break camp late tomorrow after being paid.
About 150 Vigo County men were ordered to report for pre induction physicals. Only 100 rode the 9 15 buses from the Federal Building. Seven of the missing men were unaccounted for late Friday. Some asked to take exams elsewhere or were dropped for marriage since the last draft. One veteran was exempted. his prior service not on file.
Ernest W. Eveland former Paris High School coach remains an employee of the Paris Board of Education after Judge Ward P. Holt of Salem Illinois rules he was not legally discharged as of November 2 1949 and Eveland is entitled to costs.
The common council approved a rezoning plan for a truck terminal in a residential area along with the tentative budget. The budget would raise the tax rate by over one dollar per hundred and deputies' salaries by about 180 dollars yearly. The body also considered railroad crossing signals and rent control extension, sparking political debate led by Eugene Dyche and several labor and civil rights groups.
Terre Haute begins its 34th Miners Picnic at Memorial Stadium for three days of events. Arenzo Eugene Selden the Stratosphere Man performs thrice daily. Local baseball teams compete in a tournament with ten entrants led by Black Hawk as two year defending champions. Joseph Yablonski is the featured speaker at the event.

The Vigo County Council trimmed 25000 from emergency appropriations in its two day meeting. Notable cuts affected the election board freight and the highway fund from the gasoline tax. Several line items were partially allowed including equipment, insurance, autopsies and welfare funding. Members cited budget alignment with annual plans and named six council members present.
The House approved a grant of authority for President Truman to enforce wage price controls and rationing, sending the measure to the Senate where Democrats expect defeat for GOP efforts to limit it. Administration leaders forecast Senate passage next week of a similar mobilization bill after a 383 to 12 House vote.
Senator Maybank of South Carolina said he would offer an amendment next week to give President Truman at least standby controls over speculative trading in commodity markets, arguing that the market is going crazy.
The president said he would welcome anti inflation powers without strings, but yesterday clarified that the time to use such all-out mobilization authority is not yet in sight. The House bill would authorize other economic controls including allocation of scarce industrial materials, priority for defense contracts, and related measures.
Winston Churchill urged immediate creation of a united western European army to defend against Russia. He argued the west has about two years breathing space and urged democratic controls, saying American atomic superiority and Soviet empire building threaten peace. The motion pressed for a united western Europe as a deterrent to war.
Washington reports President Truman will not seek passage of a Universal Military Training bill this session. White House says he remains strong for UMT but delaying due to focus on Korean War needs and concerns from Congress about cost. Defense Department says a UMT bill is in draft and will be sent to Congress soon.
In Washington on August 11 informed sources said the railroads and unions for train men and conductors were close to settling their dispute. A strike break could come this week as deadlock eases between carriers and unions.
U S reinforcements approach Pohang as a night clash unfolds near the American airfield on Korea s east coast. Rocket firing Mustangs assist ground forces while a reinforcing column of U S tanks and South Korean troops closes in. A.P. report notes commanders Walker and Partridge observing the battle.
A munitions board official says civilian steel use will remain at most five to six percent of U S production under President Truman's new 10.5 billion military request. The military now uses about four percent and can divert nonessential items like slot machines to meet weapon needs without harming civilian supply or stockpiled strategic materials. The board expects to fund the Korean War and rearmament while preserving strategic reserves.
On the Pohang front in Korea American and South Korean forces battled to defend Pohang and its airfield. An American infantry column was ambushed around 4:30 a.m. by guerrillas ten miles southwest of Pohang but the lead unit pushed through to establish defenses around the airstrip by mid afternoon. American tanks and artillery were still en route and the airfield had been repaired after Japanese construction.
U S Pershing tanks broke through roadblocks on the south coast to convoy reinforcements and supplies to American troops cut off earlier. Convoys reopened the road between Chindong and Pongam ni by mid afternoon as Marines evacuated the seriously wounded and helicopters aided the evacuation.
Henry Wallace says Russia is the aggressor in Korea and that the United States is effectively at war with the Soviets. He argues there may still be a path to peace but the U S has lost the initiative and Moscow shows no interest.
Unemployment claims fell 12 percent in Indiana last week as hiring rose in manufacturing and seasonal farm labor. John W. Crise, director of the Indiana Employment Security Division, attributed the drop to these increases.
