The U S Navy withdrew its heavy ships from Shanghai to avoid entanglement in China's civil war as Communist armies closed on the city. Britain followed, pulling its Shanghai force out as ships reposition toward the Yangtze estuary to stay out of range of artillery. Shanghai appeared ready to receive the Reds, with no resistance evident.
Sen Connally says the State Department should press a strong protest after armed Chinese communist troops invaded the American ambassador's home in Nanking and routed Ambassador J Leighton Stuart from his bed. Officials ordered a vigorous embassy protest as concerns rose over the looting of the military attache's plane and Stuart's return to the United States.
In a tense scene in a city of 5 million observers feared a communist takeover as nationalist forces retreated. Communist soldiers reportedly burst into the home of American Ambassador J Leighton Stuart in Nanking. Stuart and his staff were unharmed. A strong State Department protest was being prepared.

In Boyaca state two days of political turmoil left fourteen conservatives dead as their houses were burned by liberals, according to El Tiempo. The liberal daily reported the weekend violence occurred during the ongoing unrest.

Roberta Lee a 14 year old fire heroine leaves Cook County Hospital for a new $17,000 home in Des Plaines built in recognition of her heroism after she saved four younger siblings from a blaze that destroyed their home. A White House announcement indicated his departure, following a resignation talk with the president. Detroit April 26. Elev enth hour peace talks arranged today by Walter P. Reuther president of the United Auto Workers in an effort to avert a major strike at Ford Motor Company. Ford Local 600 voted overwhelmingly last week to strike over alleged production speedups. Thomas Thompson president of the local asked for formal authorization to conduct the strike and that authorization will be provided by the U A W executive board meeting Thursday. Reuther urged a conference with top Ford officials to settle the issues without strike action.
A 52 year old teacher Mrs Ina Donohoe was shot in the left side by two pupils Floyd Titus aged 16 and Glen Phillips aged 11 who had threatened to harm her husband a nearby teacher. She was taken to Jarman Memorial Hospital Tuscola in good condition. Sheriff Glen Braden arrested the boys and they were taken to Moultrie county jail Sullivan for questioning by State's Attorney Joseph B Much.
