Fire Levels Residence Near Oblong Illinois Kills Seven Children

Fire swept a two story frame home near Oblong Illinois overnight killing seven children aged four to fifteen. Fire Chief Charles Bloom said six bodies were recovered and a search of the ruins for the seventh was underway. The parents escaped as the blaze destroyed the Jasper County house shortly after 1 am, trapping the children upstairs.

Israel Jets Strike Jordan Amid Radar Network Hit

Israeli warplanes over Jordan claim to have knocked out most of Egypt's early warning radar network in a heavy attack described as the heaviest in over a year. A senior Israeli general staff member warned of more action to come as Egypt reports Suez Canal clashes and Israel targets Arab guerrilla bases in north Jordan. Indian Airlines crash kills 44 near Calcutta

A twin engine Indian Airlines Fokker Friendship with 44 aboard crashed in a thunderstorm near Khulna in East Pakistan while en route from Argatala to Calcutta. Four crew members and 40 passengers died. no passenger list was immediately available.

The Mississippi River crest pushed south heightening risk for Iowa Illinois and Missouri while northern waters receded. Town populations and students aided flood defense as Minot North Dakota evacuated residents waited for waters to drop. Prairie du Chien and nearby areas faced rising water with evacuations and a closed U S 18 bridge to Marquette.

Vigo County Schools name acting treasurer and junior high principal

The Vigo County School Corp board named Mrs. Kath Tyne Lowry acting treasurer to fill the vacancy after Harry McCullough resigned. James Jackson was chosen as Concannon Junior High principal replacing Jack Hoffman. The board discussed intimidation cases involving students and approved revised sewage plant plans and a new transcription system.
