A spring squall line raged across the Midwest for a third day causing blinding dust and traffic halts in the South west. The system, the worst in two decades in some areas, moved east from the Dakotas with Michigan forecast to see 50 mph winds and another front threatening hail and high winds across Oklahoma and Kansas.
The Weather Bureau warned Hoosiers of severe thunderstorms and high winds moving across Indiana. Heavy rains drenched counties with Monticello reporting 1.71 inches and Kekomoe 0.91 inch, Indianapolis over 0.5 inch. A hail storm near Elkhart Tuesday damaged two greenhouses.
Tornadic winds and blinding dust storms hit Colorado New Mexico Texas and Oklahoma with visibility zero in Pueblo and half mile in Childress and Big Spring. In Illinois Iowa and Wisconsin deadly weather killed three people including Merle Venzke and Frank Mitzen.
An unofficial report from Jakarta says a Sunday night landslide in Pakasiran village, Central Java, buried 46 houses under 15 feet of earth and debris with only two survivors. The report notes several hundred died.
More than two thousand first and second graders received the Salk vaccine without ill effects in the initial mass inoculation. Dr. John Sullivan said the process was routine and praised school staff for smooth clinics. A second shot will be given in four weeks with no mass third dose planned.
Local No 1064 and Terre Haute Transit Company announce a tentative operating contract terms likely to be approved by union members Saturday. The firm rushes equipment for restoring service paused since August 16 with a May 2 opening date possibly delayed by garage space issues.
State Representative Walter H. Maehling presented Mayor Ralph Tucker with a check for Terre Haute reflecting the city’s increased share of the alcoholic gallonage tax. The payment, part of House Bill No. 30, covers March 9 to March 31 and signals a larger future quarterly refund for April to June. Earlier checks went to Riley, West Terre Haute, and Seelyville.
Governor Craig departed Indianapolis by train for Washington to discuss juvenile crime with FBI Director J Edgar Hoover. His staff expect a week away as he engages with national office on crime policy.
Earld E. Emmitt, 55, concedes he accidentally touched off a West Side Humboldt Park Hotel blaze that killed at least two people. He said a businessman paid him five dollars to burn rubbish behind the hotel and warned him against burning it. Prosecutors plan involuntary manslaughter charges.
Four Marion teenagers were arrested after a drive-in shooting spree near Marion Indiana. A 17 year old admitted firing a rifle at a car driven by Frank Burton and a bullet narrowly missed him. Police said the youths returned home, retrieved a rifle, and opened fire after an argument at the drive-in.
Sen. Watkins of Utah rejected any apology from the Senate for its McCarthy misconduct charges. McCarthy displayed a tax refund check and called probes dishonest, saying the Watkins Committee and a Senate subcommittee owe the American people an apology. Continued on page 6.
Brocton Illinois cancels its village election as no candidates are available for the two trustee positions. Hartman Schwartz the village attorney advised the board to retain the current trustees and plan a next year election. The board consists of a mayor and six trustees.
Southern governors urged arbitration and immediate end to 38 day railroad and telephone strikes crippling commerce in 14 states. A meeting in Nashville with L N dispute and Southern Bell dispute set for Atlanta next Saturday with governors of Mississippi Georgia and Alabama leading the mediation effort.
In Princeton New Jersey on April 20 disagreement arose over where Albert Einstein's brain would be studied. Princeton Hospital claimed the brain would stay local while Montefiore Hospital in New York expected it to be brought there for dissection and analysis. Dr Thomas S Harvey of Princeton Hospital called the incident a misunderstanding and said the brain would remain in Princeton.
Phil Yazdzik of Olyphant Pennsylvania, famed for a 77 hamburger spree, sat at Richard's Drive-In in Detroit and began a fried chicken challenge. He aimed for 30 orders with the stated goal of four per order, eating without potatoes or trimmings.
The Weather Bureau notes thundershowers through the day with temperatures around 67 rising to 22p. m. and a river stage of 5.3 feet and falling. Sunrise at 5.9% and sunset at 6:22.
The high yesterday reached 80 degrees and the low last night was 65. Precipitation was listed as trace.

Street thermometer readings indicate 68 at 9 AM and 67 at 2 PM.
The House considers a postal pay bill with debate over an 8.2 percent rise versus 7.6 percent. Proponents seek retroactive pay and postmaster general reporting on classifications while Republicans back 7.6 percent amid Eisenhower veto risks. The Senate supports a 10 percent federal employee raise.
Washington reports the United States will continue support for Premier Ngo Dinh Diem despite French opposition. Gen. J Lawton Collins, Eisenhower's envoy, was instructed to announce the stance before returning for consultations on Vietnam. Collins departed Saigon Tuesday.
A heavy April snowstorm hit Alberta starting Monday, bringing up to 16 inches around Calgary and raising fears of substantial cattle and sheep losses on rangeland. Local reports describe widespread winter weather impacting livestock and grazing conditions.
Adm. Arthur W. Radford warned that the Chinese Communists intend to seize Formosa by force if needed. He left on an emergency trip to Formosa as the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman commented on the buildup and the resolve of the Reds.
Taipei reporting from Formosa states Red China has about 800 aircraft, including 500 jets, along the Fukien and Chekiang coast opposite Formosa. The China News cited new Russian type planes, and a Nationalist patrol aircraft recently engaged but avoided Russian MIG17 or MIG19 interceptors, newer than the MIG15s used in Korea.
Formosa defense forces including United States units are ready as can be. Radford and Walter Robertson assistant secretary of state for Far Eastern affairs departed for Formosa, about two weeks after the earlier warning, as officials coordinated plans.
Chinese Premier Chou En Lai delayed an eight nation meeting in Bandung aimed at easing the Formosa crisis. He blocked work on human rights definition and blocked Parliamentary procedure steps, prompting an indefinite postponement by Colombo powers including India Burma Pakistan Ceylon and Indonesia.
Prime Minister R G Menzies told the Australian House of Representatives that the government will propose raising two divisions to be ready if war breaks out in Southeast Asia. The statement was made in Canberra on April 20.
A political committee afternoon session at the Formosa talks ran late while Chou Enlai met with India’s UN representative V K Krishna Menon. The talks were held amid terse moments and unclear explanations regarding agenda items.
In Highland near Hammond Indiana two people died and one was critically injured in a crash between a car and a truck. The deceased are Donald Williams and Marilyn Finnerty both of Gary. Elmer Lemmon of Gary is in critical condition at St Margaret s Hospital. The truck was driven by Elmer E Powell of Kenosha Wisconsin. Powell was not hurt.
President Eisenhower asked Congress for 3.53 billion dollars in foreign aid to fight communism worldwide. He said most funds would bolster military and economic support in Asia, though he did not specify amounts for Formosa or Viet Nam. Harold Stassen noted two thirds of annual aid targets Asia.
Vanderburgh County grand jury began hearings on two killings linked to 30 year old Leslie Irvin. Prosecutor Paul Wever plans first degree murder indictments in the Kerr shooting at a city filling station on December 23 and the Holland liquor store death on December 2.
