General Fitzhugh Lees Boston Reception of Southern Soldiers
General Fitzhugh Lee describes Boston crowds cheering the Norfolk Blues on their return and reflects that reconstruction is no longer controlled by politicians. He notes a sightless veteran saying his eyes were put out but he is glad to see them, and an old man who lost two sons expresses mixed war memories and hopes for national unity. The speech links cordial welcome to reconciliation between North and South.
