Merus Multicanus Morris's Silk Farmer notes in the Sept issue that Southern mulberry trees for sericulture are superior to Northern stock and should fetch better prices. The editor advises leaving trees standing through winter, not lifting cuttings, and proper storage of unripened wood to protect future spring plantings while covering cuttings with dry earth.

West Point Ga Sept 18 four men from Chambers Alabama died in a well near Standing Rock after gas or hazards prevented ascent. A rope descent failed to save the first three. the fourth perished shortly after partial ascent. Advice urged: test for vapor with a lighted candle before any descent.
From Smyrna dated July 26 the extract notes that Turkish power is seen as gone by many but subjects fear European influence more. It mentions Mehemet Ali's officer tipping a battle favoring the Turks, with 10 000 killed or wounded out of 40 000 to 50 000. The Young Sultan, about seventeen, marries seven wives weekly while a grey Prime Minister works to keep the empire together.
