Taxation debate in the U S House 1841 Speech by Mr Rhett
In the 1841 House speech Mr Rhett attacks North Carolina advocates of taxes on luxuries, argues against distributing public lands proceeds to states, defends indirect taxation, condemns direct taxation, and defends South against protective tariffs while warning of union dissolution as a political weapon. He cites Stanton, Adams, and Governor Swain amid broader sectional tensions.
