The barque Mexico under Capt Winslow sailed from Liverpool Oct 25 with 116 aboard. A brutal gale, frozen lead, and lack of pilots left the ship adrift near Hempstead Beach. After hours of peril the vessel sank, and 9 men were rescued while remaining passengers froze to death, many women and children among the dead or dying. The NY Courier reports.
