The Tarborough Press sells weekly issues at two dollars fifty cents yearly if prepaid or three dollars after year end. Short terms under a year cost fifty cents per month. Discontinuations allowed with arrears. distant subscribers must prepay or provide local references. Ads under a square cost one dollar first insertion, 25 cents each further, longer ads at proportional rates. judicial ads cost 25 percent more. Letters to the editor must be postpaid.
The text presents a garbled version of Twas the Night Before Christmas with numerous typos. It recounts St Nicholas entering the house, delivering toys, and wishing readers a merry Christmas and a good night in a traditional holiday poem style.
In a December 10 1842 letter from New York General Cass states his Democratic allegiance since youth. He opposes a national bank, cites U S experiences, and emphasizes sound specie and prudent credit observed in France. He signs off with respect to Mahlon Dickerson.
Washington City December 9 1842 Col Benton mails to Blair and Rives explaining his position on the upcoming presidential election He says he cannot define a formal stance and will let his actions show his loyalties He states his support for Martin Van Buren and willingness to accept any appropriate office except his current one indicating his conduct should speak for him.
In the Pennsylvanian a Van Buren letter to Henry Horn discusses whether he should be considered a presidential candidate. He urges party unity, says personal favors should not influence selection, and asserts that the Democracy will name its candidate in due time to preserve harmony and strength. He recalls his Missouri letter and reiterates commitment to Democratic principles.
Andrew Jackson argues against a national paper currency as a mere humbug. He contends that true payments should be in specie, circulating among laboring classes, and warns that paper money depresses labor through depreciation. He notes Cuba’s lack of paper currency and signs off exhausted but as a friend, Moses Dawson.
A preacher urges fortitude patience and perseverance to overcome misfortune. He mocks fretting, urges rational calm, and uses humorous imagery to warn against constant complaint. The sermon commends maintaining hope, bearing adversity with cheer, and relying on strength and charity to weather trials. It concludes with a note on a Louisiana auction of a Mississippi plantation viewed as a good speculator’s bid.
Birmingham advertiser notes that birds changing countries with seasons reflect winter severity. Early woodcocks seen on September 9 signal a cold winter. Abundant oak mast, hips and haws also predict a long hard winter, per the regional observation.
A Germantown Telegraph editor extols a curing recipe for beef or pork as the best yet. Mix one gallon water with salt sugar and saltpetre then boil skim off dirt, cool and apply for four to five weeks. Meat should be well covered and salted if kept for two days after killing. Also a farmer joke features Sambo and a two-harvest year.
