Jedediah Burchard, organizer of sixty day prayer meetings, has begun operations in Poughkeepsie. The P Journal labels him artful and hypocritical, calling him an itinerant vagabond and asks what steps should be taken to rid the town of him.
A lightning bolt struck Walter Hawley’s home three miles west of Ridgefield church Connecticut during the night of the lith inst. Hawley his son and grandchild were killed in their beds. Mrs Hawley found them dead and later bore a child. The house suffered no damage.
A brutal murder occurred at Butler's tavern six miles east of Columbus on July 14. The Columbus Register reports two travelers at supper, an elderly man and a younger man about thirty five, who planned to stay, then a third person arrived, ordered a drink, and engaged the elder in conversation.
A Philadelphia man posing as a traveler insulted an elderly resident and was confronted by the landlord and others. A ruffian named Abraham Winner stabbed the wounded man twice, one in the breast and one in the abdomen, and fled. The victim died after being carried inside. Winner was captured near Alum Creek bridge and brought to justice. The murder case goes to September trial in Wood County.
The New York Star reports J W Taylor was tried in Monmouth County New Jersey for murdering his mother and a lodger and setting fire to the house to hide the crime, but was acquitted on an insanity defense.
In Lower Canada large tumultuous meetings denounce coercion by Lord Russell and the British aristocracy. Papineau leads the protests seen as the O Connell of the region. Proclamation by Governor General Earl Gossford fails to deter gatherings as Canada may seek admission to the American Union.
