Steele named Taos Valley village administrator

Susan Steele will become Taos Valley Ski Valley's third administrator since 1997. She leaves Ravenna Nebraska where she was the town's first administrator for a 1400 resident community. Steele starts Oct 15 after Rob Straebel's July resignation following 30 years as village leader. She praises past capital improvements and master planning and aims to bring new ideas while relishing the Rocky Mountain move. Steele holds an MPA from University of Nebraska Omaha gained during city administrator internships in Iowa.

Free shot clinic brings vaccines to Taos on Oct 1

New Mexico Department of Health travels with the Got Shots Protect Tots tour stopping at Wal-Mart Taos on October 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Immunizations are free for measles whooping cough rotavirus chicken pox and hepatitis B. The event offers free keepsakes and photos for shot records. Local partners include Wal-Mart Taos Kiwanis Club HSD and Lovelace Community Health Plan. Taos mayor sued. business owner files countersuit

Taos businessman Jeff Northrup of Jack-Wrap-It Express countersues Mayor Bobby Duran claiming the original suit violated free speech and seeks to defend against alleged retaliation. The Aug 13 filing in Eighth Judicial District Court follows a TRO request over a Horse Fly advertisement using Duran’s photo to promote passport photos.

Injured BASE Jumper Falls From Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

John Nourse, 24, of San José California, suffered a broken ankle and femur after a BASE jump from the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge in New Mexico. Officials say his parachute did not fully deploy and he waited longer than the recommended four seconds. He was airlifted by Santa Fe National Guard Black Hawk to Holy Cross Hospital. State police consider a public nuisance charge.

Taos faces push to move water plan without town approval

Taos Town Council blocked discussion of the welfare statement on Sept. 18 with a 3-2 vote. The Taos County Commission, as fiscal agent, expects to approve and send the regional water plan to the Interstate Stream Commission despite Taos officials’ objections. Officials warn delays risk federal funding and state grants for Taos County water projects, potentially up to $10 million.
