Friday morning September 20 an historic Taos County Democratic event drew a distinguished crowd. Party chairman Frank Trujillo called the gathering the most influential Democrats in one room as Don Fowler, National Chairman of the Democratic Party, spoke to attendees.
The Neem Karoli Baba Ashram has appealed in the Eighth Judicial District Court challenging the New Mexico Municipal County Zoning Authority ruling that the Ashram must reapply for an amended special use permit. The temple sits on 1.7 acres of an eight acre parcel near Valverde Street and Geronimo Lane. Ashram officials call the ruling illegal and vow to pursue First Amendment rights as Bhandara festivities loom with 600 to 650 attendees expected on Ashram grounds.
Phoenix judge Carl Muecke rejected lifting the 13 month logging ban on 11 national forests in New Mexico and Arizona to protect the Mexican spotted owl. He criticized Forest Service consultations as insufficient and inadequate, saying the agency ignored full forest plans and broader programs. Forest Guardians praised the ruling while noting ongoing legal concerns.
Taos School Board approved 56 175 in earthwork by Northern Mountain Constructors for the future Northside Elementary site at Cross Roads near State Roads 230 and 150. A dispute centered on a 37 000 line item not spent, with Fred Waltz pressing for a gym meeting minimum standards as plans progress toward a December construction start and a 1997 opening.
The Archdiocese of Santa Fe and Rev. Vincent Lipinski faced a sex abuse lawsuit by a former parishioner and parents alleging negligence in screening and supervision. A settlement for an undisclosed amount was reached last week after Lipinski pled guilty to two counts.
