Alcohol at root of violence in Taos seminar

Dr James Weston the state medical examiner linked alcohol to most violence against children and domestic abuse. He cited 87 percent of child sex offenders under alcohol influence and warned that lack of extended family worsens abuse. Taos officials called for shelters, hotlines, and tougher enforcement to protect victims.

Recreation on the rise in Taos County facilities plan

Taos County Commission approved phase three of a BOR outdoor recreation plan and a proposed 149000 baseball field with four back to back diamonds, fencing, a well and a press box. Land and grant approval pending, with in kind county support of 37000. Phase two adds multi purpose courts in Amalia Cerro San Cristobal El Prado Los Cordovas and Vadito. Also 20 counties receive 100 each in cigarette tax rebates for athletic equipment.

Turley Mill site eyed for 10 acre donation plan

Landowners Joe and Mary Sanchez and Bill and Jane Mingenbach consider giving 10 acres near the Turley Mill to the Kit Carson Memorial Foundation. The offer would come from the landowners, not developer Peter Duval, who unveiled a 5311 acre subdivision plan at a Taos County Commission meeting.

Autumn Trout and Touring Highlights From Mountain Realms

Autumn fishing thrives with wild brown trout feeding in cool streams aspen country tours run from Angel Fire and Red River with Jeep Trailways and Roadrunner Tours offering daily trips through Oct 15. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad offers a five hour ride from Chama to Antonito with bus return, while local chambers assist with reservations and additional canning guidance is provided in booklets.

Taos to Review Town Trees Health Plan Changes

Taos trees on town property are in poor condition. Local committee led by Liz Showalter will trim only five or six dying trees while forestry officials propose removing 289 trees and replacing 57. Students from Taos High School helped collect health data, classifying trees by species and safety risk for the town report.

Embattled CAP to Air Finance Items at Taos CAP Session

Taos Rio Arriba Community Action Program plans a Thursday meeting at 7 30 p m in the El Prado CAP building. The agenda includes a Community Service Association review the monthly financial report and routine items. CAP sought sealed bids Sept 18 for athletic equipment but received none. Gus Cordova says purchases will proceed on the open market as an emergency measure. Equipment aims to aid athletic clubs and schools for disadvantaged children including softball basketball boxing tennis volleyball and more.
