State to hear Trailways bus plan hearings set

The State Corporation Commission will hold early January hearings on Trailways' plan to end service through Taos and other routes from Albuquerque to the Colorado line and to Las Cruces. Taos manager John Van Arsdale cites local riders relying on the service for medical trips and art shipments.

Town rehires Cordova as town manager on four-year deal

Cordova is rehired with a four year contract as town manager. The town attorney position nears renewal and council members seek proposals annually. Andres Vargas has submitted a proposal to continue representing the town.

Rescuers call off plane hunt for two Taos locals

Rescuers ended air search for the single engine Mooney missing on Sept. 9 between Cuba and Taos with Charles Holden 49 and Ripple Erskine 37 aboard. Ground search was halted Sept. 13 and no new leads will restart aerial checks until reliable information surfaces.

Taos County seeks to revive Development Corporation plan

Taos Town and Taos County aim to form a new Taos County Development Corporation. Originating in the 1970s, the group helped bring Wells Lamont glove factory to Taos and now holds about $1000 in a bank account while inactive. A cooperative with Main Street and economic development programs is also considered.

Taos Fatal Crash Claims Romero and Lujan

L Leroy S Romero 20 and Ida L Lujan 20 of Taos died in a 4 a.m. crash on U.S. 64 near Kirby Ranch when a Mazda pickup veered off the roadway and rolled over after the driver allegedly fell asleep. Police cited liquor involvement. Lujan worked on The Taos News sales staff and Romero was employed by Farr's supermarket.

State finds 1000 marijuana plants near Penasco

State Police spotted about 1,000 four foot tall marijuana plants one mile south of Penasco and arrested an unidentified man of Anglo appearance. Spokesman Capt. John Danko said the man had no ID and would not talk. The find followed a Sept. 16 air sighting as part of a second raid in two weeks.

Twining district vows fix after self monitoring failings

The Twining Water and Sewage District faces continued pollution concerns as members of the Committee to Save the Rio Hondo cite EID reports of serious ammonia phosphorus and algae violations between May and August. District manager Kenneth Burkett admits technical violations but says new staff and updated equipment will correct issues. An EPA inspection in 1985 raised alarms about self monitoring and the Twining lab. Burkett notes hires Marcos Baca and Bernie Garcia, plus UV treatment units approved to boost treatment capacity, and says customers will receive guidance on low phosphate soaps. The board approved two UV systems and a district-wide notice to customers.

Taos schools report 5.6 percent enrollment rise this year

Taos school system shows 5.6 percent more students than projected with Taos Elementary adding 59 more pupils. Total in class reached 3,034 from an anticipated 2,871, while Talpa Elementary matched its projection. Board members warn under projecting could jeopardize funding and stress state aid varies by grade.
