Taos Prepares Historic Zone Plan With Review Committee

The historic review committee appointed by Mayor Lovato will meet on Sept 15 to assess the Garner Hicks survey identifying about 250 pre 1945 Taos buildings. Aimed at a six month ordinance, the move could bring tax breaks for some owners and set design rules for new construction in six blocks around Taos Plaza. Orlando Ortiz chairs the panel with members Rose Saavedra Holland Frances Mares Martinez Terry Moynihan Jack Boyer Nick Martinez and Fred Peralta.

Rehabilitation ordered for Martinez in Taos District Court

David Lee Edward Martinez pled guilty to burglary and larceny in Taos District Court on Sept. 15. Judge Jerry Wells said Martinez must serve 36 months at the state penitentiary with the sentence suspended if he completes a year at New Arizona Family Inc. in Arizona. Upon completion he will be placed on probation. Also on Sept. 15, Daniel Lee Walker was extradited to Oklahoma on a forged instrument charge after initial arrest in Red River on stolen vehicle and breaking and entering charges.

Taos P Z commission moves to clear subdivisions pact

Taos Planning and Zoning Commission gives preliminary find on two east side subdivision proposals by Allen Stamm and Richard Cook. Plans include 12 and 60 units, zone changes, gravel streets, variances for small lots, and floodplain work. Federal grant of 1.125 million tied to sewer water and drainage expansion. final HUD filing due November 1. October meeting set to decide.

El Prado zoning delayed awaiting public hearing and boundary change

El Prado's first draft zoning awaits a public hearing before the Extraterritorial Zoning Commission. Residents along State Road 3 seek inclusion outside present limits, with petitioning neighbor John Painter collecting signatures. If approved, outlying areas gain town rules while remaining unincorporated.
