Two men kayaking from John Dunn Bridge to Pilar were stranded for about 25 hours in the Rio Grande Gorge before a National Guard Black Hawk helicopter rescued them. Wayne Wilson, 71, of Shreveport, Louisiana, thanked Taos Search and Rescue volunteers after being taken to Holy Cross Hospital. A New Mexico State Police helicopter had spotted the pair near Gorge Bridge early Wednesday morning.
Dean Maher 47, also known as Dean Stahl, was charged in Taos Magistrate Court with 12 counts after police say he torched his home during a marijuana raid. About 11 dogs inside died. three escaped, one badly burned but surviving. Maher faced counts of extreme cruelty to animals and was expected to face aggravated arson charges, with marijuana possession later in doubt. He claimed innocence and blamed police after the arraignment.
Indications from Taos point to a reopening plan for the animal shelter on St. Francis Drive. Since its August 2 closure due to funding, Melissa Naylor and town officials have pushed a solution with volunteers cleaning the site, removing old appliances, and preparing for pest control. New shelter director Robin Laidlaw says the building needs a new face, staff, paint, and strong community support as renovations continue.
