Taos County struggles with dwindling reserves as the general fund sits near $300k to $325k, far below the $1.1 million emergency cushion. DFA officials warned commissioners to fix budgeting issues after reviewing the 1999 2000 accounts.
Justin Sinclair, 18, died after a fight at the bottom of the Rio Grande Gorge. Jedediah Lee, 19, has been jailed on murder charges. Both Taos High School students were at an underage drinking party attended by about 30 people 15 miles west of Taos on State Road 570.
Hearing officer Elizabeth Musselman upheld Taos County's termination of former housing authority director Beatrice Silva last spring. The opinion found Silva had a conflict of interest in Section Eight housing rentals and failed to disclose requested information to county officials. The ruling may affect potential legal action against former auditor Bernadine Garsee.
Investigators in Questa focus on a small pool of suspects after the killings of 52 year old Earl Gonzales and his 10 year old daughter Clarissa. The bodies were found at their remote mountain home on September 2 with death estimated within 12 to 24 hours prior. Earl was shot once in the head.
Eighth Judicial District Attorney John Paternoster confirmed his office is assisting in an ongoing state police investigation into possible criminal handling of funds by the local United Federation of Teachers union leadership. He said the case has not been formally handed to his office and no referral has been made yet.
A Taos community meeting drew about 200 residents to question Wal-Mart about a proposed super store. Daphne Davis defended pricing, jobs, and local impact while stressing customer service as the company pledged to be a good employer.
