A Taos group includes Gary Morris Philip Barajas John Brooks Tommy Minton Ron Sheila McCarthy as students at the University of New Mexico Kennon program this year.
Munir Fahmi al Jarrah governor of Diyala Province in Iraq visited Taos County as part of the International Visitor Program. He toured Soil Conservation Service projects, Taos Pueblo, and other sites while considering agricultural programs and Job Corps style efforts for Iraq. Accompanied by Dr Wael Tawam, he noted differences in Iraq’s governance and praised U S reception. He traveled from Dyala to Denver and is slated to visit San Francisco.
The town to contact the State Health Department about proposed lagoons at the sewage disposal plant within 30 days. Molycorp finishes 6000 feet of standby tailings line at the Questa mine and spends about 50000 dollars to install the system for use during repairs. A recent 50000 dollar repair on existing lines reduces tailings velocity with two new drop boxes and reinforced bends to minimize breaks. Flooding has hampered operations, but management expects smooth runs after completion and repairs.
Leo Katz of Santa Fe Development Co Albuquerque said at a Friday co-op board meeting he will hire as many local laborers carpenters and bricklayers as possible for the new Kit Carson Electrical Cooperative headquarters. He also plans to pay reasonable wages and use local subcontractors where feasible.
Taos council ordered no parking signs and do not enter signs at the plaza entrance after a corner incident. A motion to remove west side parking meters to Martyr's Lane passed. The council also eyed a sidewalk along Pueblo Road and revised Guadalupe Plaza parking lot directions. Lucy Gutierrez was appointed to the Airport Commission, replacing Sally Howell.
The case is aided by Santa Fe lawyers Russell Jones Jerry Werth eim and John F McCarthy with District Attorney John E Hobbes and Juan B Sanchez for the state. Jury members listed include Estevan Gunile Jr Louis Romero Frank Miera and others with Gustavo S Fernandez as alternate. Noble posted a $25,000 bond on Sept 3 after Taos County Jail detention since Feb 15.
Bob Day of the Red River area submitted a resignation to the Questa Board of Education citing personal matters beyond his control. Day asked to be replaced by a Red River representative and noted regret at leaving after a year and a half of service while praising the board and superintendent for progressive leadership.
Miss Margaret Miller, who spent her summer vacation working in Honolulu, is returning to the University of New Mexico to continue her studies.
