BLM pauses Spike 20P use near Cerro in sagebrush plan

The Taos Resource Area of the BLM tentatively removes tebuthiuron Spike 20P from its Sagebrush reduction plan in the Wild Rivers Area near Cerro. Cattle will be allowed to graze the loop allotment as public opinion shifts away from restricting cows near recreation sites.

Red River loses school board bid

Red River officials failed to win approval for a redistricting plan at a Questa school board meeting. Attorney John Aragon argued that dividing the district into sub districts would ensure representation, but the board voted to not pursue the proposal after an executive session.

Taos crash statistics show high county and town rates

New Mexico data reveal Taos County recorded 801 crashes in 1991 with 11 fatalities and 381 injuries. Alcohol involvement was 9 percent of crashes, while the county’s per mile crash rate and death rate ranked among the highest in the state. Taos OKs limited outdoor ads in C-2 zone

Taos Planning and Zoning Commission approved outdoor displays in the C-2 general commercial zone after staff recommendations. Planning director Allen Vigil noted displays require P Z permission and are not allowed in the central business district under any circumstances. He called it a zoning issue, not a sign code issue, and said displays must not impede traffic.

Family reunited after 16 year old girl found in California

A 16 year old girl who disappeared August 11 from Taos Plaza has been found and returned to her California parents. Alisa Blessing Snider used the name Alisa Omez and attended Santa Fe High School before authorities realized she was not enrolled. Taos police and Santa Fe juvenile probation officers verified her identity after sharing a description and photograph.

Spotted owl fuels appeal of 765 acre Felipito timber sale

Carson Forest Watch appeals the Felipito timber sale near Vallecitos north of El Rito charging noncompliance with owl protection policy. The letter argues 93 upper Felipito acres should be withdrawn to protect watershed and habitat while criticizing agency adherence to Fish and Wildlife guidelines and prior withdrawals.
