Board Okays Substitutes and Drivers for Junior High
The board approved hiring substitute coach Jack Jackson, a Highlands University alum, at two hours daily. It endorsed substitute drivers from a list including Sam Martinez and Benito Medina pending qualifications. Also approved were substitute teachers Mrs. Marie Fernandez and Mrs. Jacqueline Rachels, with a joint Taos meeting planned to discuss bus transportation. Fernando Valdez presided. other members included Santistevan, Cantu, Jr., Cantu, and Bava. Penascón SD superintendent Benito Duran attended as guest.

Transfer Awaits Penasco Forester
Fred Swetnam, district forest ranger at Penasco for six years, transfers to Jemez Springs District of the Santa Fe National Forest. John L. Fleming will fill Swetnam’s vacated post. Both moves take effect September 27 as Swetnam and his wife Grace move with their four children. Fleming, previously staff forester at Penasco, has 10 years with Pot Creek Logging and Lumber and began with the Forest Service in 1961. Don Seaman, Carson Forest Supervisor, announced the changes.

Woman Injured In Auto Mishap Near Ranchos de Taos
Gloria Ortiz of Ranchos de Taos was injured when her car left the Santa Fe highway south of the R and R service station early Tuesday. She was treated at Holy Cross hospital around 3:00 a.m. and later transferred to Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque for further care. Ortiz was alone in the vehicle, and no citation details were released pending an official report on her condition.

Men Sentenced for Killing Fish at Satir Lake
Willie Coca of Ranchos and Ramon Cortez of Talpa were found guilty of taking and killing fish by illegal methods at a Satir Lake, facing $100 fines plus costs. They allegedly pulled up fish traps set by the Red River hatchery to obtain New Mexican native trout spawn. An estimated 150 trout died and about 140,000 eggs were lost. Defense plans to appeal. Byam Caravan To Tour Area
