Penasco shooter given ankle monitor instead of prison
Matuel Tafoya, 25, pleaded no contest to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence for a Feb. 26 non fatal shooting in Penasco. Judge Peggy Nelson sentenced him to 364 days on an electronic ankle monitor with five years probation, warning of prison if violated. Tafoya expressed remorse and said he is changing his life while his girlfriend Crystal Vigil pleaded for his freedom to support their family. Prosecutor Hassan sought 2 1/2 years, but the court imposed probation with rehab, including Drug Court, and total six years suspended except 364 days on monitor.
