Questa tailings site hearing draws 300 supporters

At the Bureau of Land Management hearing in Questa on Aug 30, more than 300 people, mostly in support of Molycorp, attended to voice opinions on the proposed tailings dump near Guadalupe Mountain. State Sen. Carlos Cisneros led 30 speakers while opponents urged caution.

Gambling stance shapes Northern New Mexico debate Aug. 31

Gubernatorial candidates Frank Bond and Bruce King spoke at a Taos luncheon to municipal officials. Bond opposed open gambling but kept open support for a self-sustaining state lottery. King backed pari mutuel betting and bingo, and would consider a lottery if it allocated funds properly and avoided horse racing.

Taos Drums, Culture Highlighted In Taos Calendar

Taos drum tradition described as valued by many, reflecting the culture since the first Taos Pueblo residents. Weather notes show highs near 89 with lows around 48 during early September. Forecast for Sept 6 through Sept 8 calls for warm conditions with isolated mountain showers and temperatures mid 80s to 40s.

Bureau targets Taos dope growers in land sweep

Several teams of Bureau of Land Management law enforcement officers are combing Taos and Rio Arriba counties this week for illegal activity on public lands. Noel G. Johns said Crimestoppers offers 1000 dollar rewards for tips. The bureau is aided by New Mexico National Guard soldiers and helicopters.

Upstart criticizes Rio conservation area plan in Taos County

Ojo Caliente businessman Phil Archuletta, Republican challenger to Bill Richardson, calls a national conservation area along the Rio Grande Gorge a very bad idea. He argues it would hurt the Molycorp mine, raise electric bills, and harm local workers while backing continued BLM administration and closer ties with Interior Secretary Lujan.
