Carson National Forest approves a plan allowing Taos Ski Valley to operate Lift No 1 from mid May to September 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Monday. Bicycles hang gliders and dogs are banned. Public reaction and final decision await in 30 days.
Taos code enforcement chief Joe Ortiz has pushed to give teeth to the rules since April, clashing with merchants over signs and landscaping. Brandenburg notes residents must maintain property up to street midlines and face up to $300 fines or 90 days in jail for violations. Codes have existed since 1969, with strict rules on landscaping and outdoor vehicle storage. Ortiz plans spring outreach to merchants on landscaping while addressing urgent code issues.
Sabino and Corina Trujillo of Taos Canyon won The Taos News mobile home landscaping contest. They received a $1000 prize on Aug. 28 and plan to enjoy outdoors from a new gazebo next summer. Judges praised their yard, a cleanup of 4.95 acres boosted by Corina’s creative repurposing and Sabino’s handiwork.
The Angel Fire village council, amid a state malfeasance probe, met in executive session to resolve a three month old dispute over May 26 condemnation action against Angel Fire Corporation and other owners for road work. Councilors Taylor and Eby disputed minutes and the $300 per lot offer, while the corporation seeks $10 million in damages.
Taos County commissioners pledged up to 10000 in seed money and use of equipment to move dirt for a Rio Fernando Fire District station in Taos Canyon, aiming to start by December and qualify for state monies. The plan, approved at a Sept. 1 meeting, includes 30 days of equipment use and supports 290 homes and 870 residents served by the district.
Taos County and the Town of Taos plan a community effort to select a sculpture for the Civic Center front, with Andy Chavez announcing the project to honor the Columbian quincentenary and calling on sculptors to vie for the honor.
