Drowning remains a leading accidental death risk in New Mexico especially among youth, with about 65 deaths yearly and rates higher than national. Dr. Robert Knudson cites winter and summer risks, stresses immediate first aid, and outlines mouth to mouth resuscitation, chest compressions, and persistence until help arrives.
The Taos district office becomes a reality on Oct. 18 as plans for a 2,650 square foot building proceed. Pending bids and financing, the facility will include a 24 hour radio watch, administration and field offices, with extra officers and supervisors to serve Taos County and nearby areas.
Town officials move to enforce a sign code while critics led by Jim Robinson urge strengthening rules beyond big signs. He faults elapse in hearings, cites apathy among business leaders, and warns of possible legal trouble over variance procedures as several businesses remove or alter signs to comply.
David King, director, announced that Taos County is among 15 counties in New Mexico eligible for Farmers Home Administration Emergency Loan assistance. Farmers and ranchers with physical or production losses may apply at the FHA county office in the Himes Building next to Sierra Sporting Goods, with deadlines December 2.
