Questa revenues plummet and village cuts deep

A 46 percent drop in first quarter spending forces drastic Questa cutbacks led by eliminating the village administrator post. Mayor Gaillour cited Molycorp's March closure and 125 miners still at work as reasons. Other savings include a 20 percent salary cut for 11 staff, preserving sewer funds, trimming sewer department staff, reducing village attorney hours, and law enforcement revisions.

Taos Pueblo Pushes District Board Seat for Indians

Taos Pueblo Gov Santana Romero urged the Taos Municipal School Board to create a district electing an Indian representative. A study committee was formed with members Cordova Chavez and Suzan, and Gov Romero will appoint a fourth, aiming to field candidates from the Pueblo in February elections. Taos wins funding for acequia upgrades in NM plan

The $40 million acequia renovation bill, part of a $16.3 billion water resources package, passed Congress and awaits a presidential signature. Taos County could receive up to $4 million. the House allotted $265,000 for 1987, while the Senate provided $500,000 for the state. The money targets headgates, channel ditches, bank stabilization, and eroding dams along Rio Fernando de Taos, Rio Grande del Rancho, and Rio Chiquito.

Ex business manager charged with forgery

An associate of the Albuquerque law firm of Leon Taylor was to represent Marcia Peralta at an arraignment hearing on 47 counts of embezzlement and 15 counts of forgery. A State audit showed $78,000 unaccounted for in the Questa Independent School District between July 1, 1985 and Sept. 00. Most embezzlement charges involve checks issued to Peralta or endorsed by her with the payee’s name. Some checks were for goods and services to the district, including Sanchez excavation, Questa Auto Parts, and Questa athletic director Andrew Gallegos. Twelve forgery counts involve checks.

FAA funds Taos Municipal Airport expansion plan

The Federal Aviation Administration will provide 50 079 to develop an airport master plan and environmental assessment for Taos Municipal Airport. The town and State Aviation Division will each match 2 782, with work starting October 20 in Albuquerque under Leedshill-Herkenhoff. Airport manager Harvey Judges said no construction can occur until further funding. He added the expansion would benefit the community.

School bond proposal eyed for February ballot

Voters likely to face a 6.5 million school bond on the February election ballot to fund capital improvements at district schools an auditorium for the high school and new facilities Supt Leonila Serna urged the board to seek bonds rather than a levy The district would gain working capital using bond debt service The board hired Eppler Guerin Varner to prepare bond information and noted 4.8 million in bonds outstanding with eligibility for an additional 5 million voters have never rejected a school bond issue.

Taos Schools Benefit From Higher State Aid

Taos schools will receive about 270000 more state money than projected as enrollment tallies rise. The district counted 3040.5 students on Friday, with projections at 2570, noting mobility and a large junior high presence. Taos High shows the largest freshman class with 263, and only 214 are slated to graduate in May.
