Gov Bill Richardson announced 10 education reforms titled Prepare for Success during a Taos visit, proposing a cabinet secretary of higher education, funding from the surplus, expanded mentoring and tutoring, higher graduation incentives, easier transfer of credits among state universities, and accountability standards for colleges. The plan aims to boost outcomes for low income students and raise college graduation rates.
Taos County roads are in poor condition with only 40 percent paved in District 1 and as low as 9 to 10 percent in Districts 4 and 5. Road Department Supervisor Mike Trujillo cites a $5 million fix cost, a $1 million budget gap, and reliance on gasoline tax and DMV funds while staff and equipment are insufficient.
A forum for local candidates and residents to discuss county issues runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Taos Community Auditorium with doors opening at 6:30. Sadie Boyer, Republican interim probate judge since June to fill Jesus Gonzales's term, seeks her own term in 2004. She emphasizes clear communication of estate probate to keep constituents in control during emotional, difficult processes and notes her appointment by Lee Boyer.
Democratic challenger Julian A. Varela argues an attorney should hold the probate judge seat. He cites a decade of practice, claims the ability to interpret probate code beyond a generic role, and pledges to use the full powers of the office to inform Taos County residents.
