Forest Service staff awarded for long service
Six staff members of the Carson National Forest and others received awards for long service with the U S Forest Service last Thursday. John Wa vice Were among five honored for 25 years, while Duane R. Freeman John S. Hart and Arlie F Holm honored for 10 years. Mrs Rowena M Bers and Mrs Martinez noted as staff assistants. Don Seaman district supervisor presented the awards, honoring twenty duty years with the service.

Bank Buys State Bonds in Taos Group Purchase
The First State Bank of Taos joined 15 other New Mexico banks in buying $1 million in severance tax bonds for state parks improvements. About $800,000 funds the Zoological and Botanical Gardens State Park near Carlsbad. remainder supports Kit Carson Memorial State Park in Taos. President J F Brandenburg called the move a state first and noted Taos’ $40,000 stake at 4 percent interest.

Funeral rites for Gottfield R. Schentz in Taos
Funeral services were held for Gottfield R. Schentz who died Sunday at Embudo Hospital after a long illness at age 70. A Swiss native, he lived in the U.S. over 30 years, mainly in Green County Wisconsin as a cheesemaker and cheese factory manager. Survivors include his widow Helena Scheutz and three Taos area relatives. Also noted is Taos Ski Valley’s expansion with new runs and improvements including the "Honeysuckle" trail for intermediate and beginner skiers, plus widening and clearing of other runs.

Taos operator Ernie Blake announced a new skiing program with a blend of styles and techniques. Beginners will learn balance and coordination with one leg and no poles. advanced classes explore experimental methods. A ski kindergarten will operate in bad weather, and older children will be supervised to study after skiing days. Blake's 31 instructors anticipate a season starting in November with a Taos area ski patrol helping on the mountain. Think snow.
