Taos traffic plan rules out bypass at public hearing

Residents at Coronado Center expressed doubt about the Traffic and Transportation Master Plan's conclusion that a bypass is unnecessary. The study, covering 11,878 projected Taos trips in the 2009 one hour rush, finds 757 through trips. Community members urged expanding Blueberry Hill Road as a bypass west of town.

Car crash injures Taos woman after recall-related drive

Charlotte Sanchez, 71, drove off from First State Bank drive-up in Taos Plaza at high speed. Her 1987 Mercury Topaz, awaiting fuel injector repairs, crashed through a cinderblock wall into a vacant lot and stopped near Camino de la Placita. Sanchez was treated at Holy Cross Hospital and released the same day.

Taos airport expansion gets official go ahead

Earl Cook says federal authorities ordered no hold up and urged the Taos Municipal Airport expansion to proceed despite a lawsuit. The project includes an 8600 foot cross wind runway and engineering work, with $5 million in initial federal funding expected by July 1 and total cost near $10 million. A June lawsuit by the Taos Coalition for an Environmental Impact Statement challenges the 1986 environmental assessment.

Taos County cuts elderly commodities program sparks protests

More than 20 Taos residents protested the elimination of free government commodities for seniors after the county commission saved $27,000 last September. Lucy Mares urged the board, noting budget pressures and the need for winter access, while Commission chairman Michael Trujillo said he opposed the cut but others pursued it to balance the 1990-91 budget.
