Taos County faces a state audit into two years of financial transactions as Commissioner James Duran alleges that Commissioner l Herrera offered him a $500 bribe to back a heavy equipment purchase and hinted at a 10 percent payoff. Herrera and Martinez declined to comment.
County animal control officer Sam Fito Martinez says five day warnings to dog owners involved with biting or killing animals end now. A sheep owned by Joe Mondragon was killed this week and the owner’s dog has been confined. Martinez will cite owners and impose fines plus damage costs starting this week.
Three lawyers ask District Judge Joseph Caldwell to divide their $103 805.77 fee from Connie Griego’s $350 000 medical malpractice verdict in Taos County. Lead counsel Durkovich and Lopez allege Lopez and Vargas were partners when Griego filed her claim, later dissolved. Vargas seeks an equal share. Griego’s portion has been paid and the remainder sits in an interest bearing account.
Jack Frost touched Taos on Monday October 8 leaving white frost in Ranchitos and Canon. KKIT reported 35 degrees while home thermometers showed freezing. Snow from last week was melting in the mountains as Taos Ski Valley measured a foot at the summit but wasn’t lingering.
A 42-year-old Questa man, Larry L. Finstad, sustained a broken pelvis and multiple injuries in a one car crash near Cerro on SR 8. He was ejected as his 1983 Dodge Ramcharger rolled once, trapping him before Questa ambulance and Holy Cross Hospital personnel transported him to Taos. He remained in satisfactory condition at Holy Cross Hospital Tuesday.
A 28 year old Talpa man Johnny Maestas was killed by a skull fracture when a hollow dead tree he was felling with a young companion near Rio Chiquito toppled. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital and then St Vincent Hospital where he died at 10 10 p.m. A timber staff officer urged safety for woodcutters including wearing protective gear and avoiding cutting alone.
Plains Electric Cooperative seeks a 52 percent rate increase to fund a $400 million coal plant near Escalante. Taos County residents could see bills jump about 50 percent as Kit Carson Electric Cooperative passes along the rise. Public Service Commission action expected by February.
