Pueblo sues Taos County over El Salto Road

The U S Department of Justice filed suit for the Pueblo of Taos claiming El Salto Road lies on Pueblo land and seeking damages and ejectment since 1931. Taos County notes potential boundary questions and may seek an assessment district to fund a new road if the Pueblo wins. The dispute dates to 1981 with renewed talks in 1985.

Romero calls for judge resignation in backdated case

The New Mexico Supreme Court suspended Magistrate Judge Walter Herrera for 60 days over backdating a complaint against Romero. Romero, jailed after the backdated charges, calls for Herrera’s resignation and cites other alleged judicial violations. Gonzales To Handle All Herrera Cases After Suspension

Magistrate Walter Herrera's suspension places Herrera's docket under Magistrate Betty Gonzales who said she will preside over all Herrera cases. If caseload becomes unmanageable or she is disqualified, a judge from another county may be assigned. Gonzales ordered her clerks to schedule near the six month docket top.

Taos supermarket to house incubator businesses

Taos Economic Development Corp and Smiths Management Corp plan a five year lease for the old Smiths supermarket at $1 a year to create a business incubator with short term offices and a crafts outlet. Renovation could start this month. Optimists hope to host teen dances when possible.
