Molycorp plans to resume milling Monday October 9 and process 700000 tons of stockpiled ore at the Questa molybdenum mine. Employment is rising from 20 to about 230 by month end with 300 targeted by year end, while payroll is projected around 5 million for 1989. Unocal has invested 20 million in startup costs.
Taos Pueblo police chief Pat Lujan reports about 17,000 visitors to the San Geronimo festival on September 30, doubling last year. Despite crowds, no mishaps occurred, aside from parking and traffic congestion. Police noted no accidents as Taos traffic swelled after the pole climb.
The parade theme C est La Vie highlighted the French Class victory while the Tigers suffered a 55 to 21 defeat in the football game. Details are continued on Sports Page A 6.
A county disciplinary hearing ruled Paul Trujillo Jr. will not be suspended and will move from parks and recreation to maintenance without a pay cut. County manager James Duran said the decision came Tuesday. Trujillo, son of county commission chair Manuel Pablito Trujillo, faces vehicular homicide and related charges in the Sept. 15 crash that killed David Craft, 26, and injured two others. He earns about $15,000 and cannot pay court-ordered child support and medical bills.
Taos County will receive 488755 dollars from the federal government in lieu of taxes while New Mexico as a state gets 10.6 million. Of 33 counties Curry County is the only one not to receive funds due to no eligible federal land. California gets 10.9 million. Federal lands like Carson National Forest and Taos Pueblo do not pay property taxes, funds may be used like general tax revenue.
FBI agent Doug Beldon said the two Taos Pueblo men Gilbert and Andrew Romero, who died on September 10 after complaints of breathing difficulty, will not be exhumed. No autopsy will be performed because the investigation did not show evidence of homicide and autopsies would violate Taos Pueblo religious beliefs.
Duran, 15, begins a two year term at the Springer Boys School in Albuquerque after a prior probation incident. He pleaded no contest to aggravated battery for stabbing Tim Casias at Taos Junior High on the last day of school. Casias plays for Taos Tiger varsity, suspended four games for missing practice, and has returned as running back.
Jim and Leslie Leahy owners of Overland Sheepskin have purchased the 200 acre Howell property in El Prado. The land runs from Bethel church to a welding shop with about a quarter mile frontage on State Road 522. They plan to demolish old structures including the laundromat and Jerry Howell home and consider open green space with some income. Rumors of a golf course are denied. Potential ideas include a small cottage inn and a cluster business on the southern lot.
In Taos a 60 bed hospital stash from 1963 to 1975 turned up in a town warehouse basement. Gus Cordova said crates contain bed sheets, 1000 penicillin bottles, stainless surgical gear, gowns, stretchers, survival biscuits, and a centrifuge. Holy Cross staff will sort items, with narcotics to be destroyed and some supplies reused for practice.
Taos County and Sanco signed a contract on Monday allowing county residents to use the airport landfill while denying any commercial trash dumping. Harold Young of Lanco says only noncommercial trash is accepted, with a reduced monthly payment of 5500 dollars plus gross receipts taxes through June 30, 1990, when renewal may occur. The arrangement comes amid fears of a separate commercial dumping threat and discussions of possible user fees at the San Cristobal landfill.
The Taos area recorded a high of 83 degrees on Thursday September 28 and a low of 39 degrees on Sunday October 1. Weekend forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with highs in the mid 70s and lows in the 40s.
