Taos and Picuris seek transfer of Ft Wingate bison herd
Taos Pueblo and Picuris Pueblo joined three other northern pueblos last week in asking that all or part of the state managed Ft Wingate bison herd near Grants be transferred to New Mexico tribes. A Sept 18 letter to State Game Commission chair William Brininstool urged a two year period for genetic diversification before redistribution. The Oct 11 Game Commission meeting in Santa Fe will decide the herd fate of about 80 buffalo.

Taos jailer resigns after June breakout and hearing
Taos County Detention Center officer Pete Gutierrez resigned Tuesday amid an employment hearing scheduled for Sept. 25, later postponed. Gutierrez cited personal reasons. Three Mexican nationals escaped during the incident, aided by a girlfriend identified as Elizabeth Gomez, who reportedly carried a concealed gun. The escapees, Louis Aguirre Acosta, Jose Mauricio Mendoza Rocha, and Teofilo Mendoza Rocha, were all charged with drug trafficking and conspiracy and are believed to have fled to Mexico. The Taos County Sheriff’s Office and Taos Police Department are reviewing the actions internally and for possible criminal activity.

Northside Seeks Extra Funding for Northside Elementary Gym

Archuleta sentenced to 14 years in Serna killing
Manuel Archuleta was sentenced in the Eighth Judicial District Court on six years for voluntary manslaughter nine years for kidnapping and one and a half years for aggravated assault totaling 16 and a half years with two and a half years suspended to yield a 14 year sentence. Archuleta, 41, was found guilty August 7 after a September 10 1995 confrontation in a municipal parking lot during which he stabbed Tony Serna and assaulted Ruth Luna.
