Taos County budgets fear state budget spying

Gunman Threatens Police During Hostage Situation in San Cristobal

State Police and county officers converged on a mobile home near the San Cristobal Post Office shortly after noon on Tuesday to subdue Melvin Martinez who was allegedly holding a hostage at gunpoint. Authorities described him as "totally out of control" and warned he might shoot himself or officers. By 2 p.m. negotiators worked through his mother while traffic was restricted and a deputy prepared to act.

Delayed: Fernandez trial dates shuffled in county case

County commissioner David Fernandez faces two felony trials. The fraudulent use of a county credit card and embezzlement case is rescheduled for December in Taos County district court. A drunken driving and intimidation of a police officer trial is tentatively set for November 16 and 17 in Taos. Fernandez seeks re election as Democratic candidate for District 1 on November 3. He repaid for county card charges and a travel advance not taken. The initial October 1 start date was not possible due to the judge s calendar.

Cow Fundraiser Aims to Finance Taos High Weight Room

Taos High athletic director Andy Gallegos plans a cow‑party fundraiser at the baseball field on Oct 31 or Nov 7 to raise about 30000 with 20 percent for prizes. Squares sold for 100 each. a cow’s urination on a square wins second prize and defecation wins first prize. The effort supports a new school weight room and broad athletic growth for Taos students.

Threats Loom Over Hazardous Herbicide Spraying Near Tres Piedras

Spike 20P was applied on about 300 acres owned by Fermin Torres near Tres Piedras despite a threat from an anonymous caller that the plane would be shot down. No shots occurred and no illnesses were reported yet, though residents fear tebuthiuron exposure as clay pellets break down. Environmentalists criticize secrecy. the Soil Conservation Service only noted the spray would occur 21 miles northwest of Taos in late September.
