Molycorp postpones resumed production at the Questa mill for months with no layoffs expected. Mine manager Bob Sackson says the delay funds added construction as tungsten prices remain weak. Start-up shifts from early 1982 to early spring, with 150 mill workers reassigned to surface and underground projects during the closure.
An apartment in Plaza de Retiro burned Sunday night November 22. No one hurt. Fire started in unit 9 from a shorted lamp cord igniting a mattress. Taos volunteer firemen sprayed 75 gallons of water to extinguish. Adjoining unit spared by fire walls. Tenant relocated to medical center for repairs. Retiro staff had recent training in fire equipment use.
Ben and Lester Chavez of Taos pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of aggravated battery and conspiracy. Judge Joseph E. Caldwell ordered $836 restitution to victim Filbert Duran and scheduled a pre sentence report before sentencing. Juan Fresquez also pleaded guilty to larceny and conspiracy, receiving a suspended sentence and 18 months probation.

Taos County commissioners refused a Monday meeting with Housing Authority committee members who were replaced last week. The new board will be sworn in at the Dec 7 meeting, while the replaced members sought to discuss proper procedure to keep the housing authority moving forward.
Maze warned the continuing resolution veto would force cuts to crews, with the Carson employing 225 people. Taos postmaster John Flaherty called operations normal, noting only revenue forgone mail would be affected. Senators and congressmen approved both the continuing resolution and the Reagan veto, while a Forest Service official said staff would resume work until December 15 before reassessing funding.
