Taos County faces a surge in property tax protests for a second year, with 408 filings this year and 98 going to a protest board. The backlog delays revenue, hiring 12 temporary staff, and leaves newer building permits unappraised while the county weighs $15.8 million in assessed value at hearings.
A Taos grand jury indicted Adrian Vigil a 57 year old former New Mexico state police sergeant on aggravated battery against a household member and two counts of bribery and witness retaliation for an August incident. Vigil was terminated earlier this year after the alleged domestic violence event. The case was referred to state level prosecutors after local DA recusal and no arraignment is scheduled.
An El Prado woman, 51-year-old Kathy Noble, was found dead early Monday outside her home. Taos County Sheriff says medical examiners do not suspect foul play. Tom Noble said she may have been drinking and on medication. autopsy performed in Albuquerque.
