Mild trend persists as temperatures stay above average through the weekend. Expect partly cloudy conditions today with higher daytime highs, followed by sunny and warm Friday and Saturday with mid 60s highs and mid 20s lows.
Taos Recycling Center will shut down this week due to unprofitability. Robert Haspel of Environmental Control Inc. in Santa Fe plans to sell the center, which has been advertised nationwide. He criticizes local government for lacking recycling support and notes Santa Fe's curbside and commercial recycling programs.
The Taos News will close Thursday November 22 for Thanksgiving. Publication shifts to Wednesday November 21 next week. News advertising and Tempo copy deadlines move to Friday November 16 at 5 p.m.
Arsonists broke into the parks and recreation office and burned part of the Taos Municipal Judge Richard Chavez building. A Los Angelitos staff member smelled smoke around 8 a.m., called the fire department, and the fire burned out before responders arrived. Damage estimated at $15,000 to structure and contents.
Loretta Lori Lawyer 52 of Dixon was killed November 6 when her 1984 Datsun pickup veered across State Road 68 and plunged into the Rio Grande south of Pilar. Police said she crossed the center line on wet pavement, overcorrected, left the road and rolled into the river. Investigators say she likely died from injuries before being submerged.
A benefit to aid Taos Pueblo Head Start is planned for Sunday November 18 bringing together performers from six Indian tribes for song and dance. Local weather notes show Taos highs around 64 on November 12 and 13 with a forecast of partly cloudy conditions through November 17.
Taos Pueblo to receive 15000 in a good faith payment from Taos County funded by 7500 from the Worker's Compensation Fund and matched by local title firms as negotiations continue over rights to El Salto Road and seven byways. County seeks state approval for quick disbursement by November 15 amid ongoing federal settlement efforts.
Nine year old Joy Weisman died at the scene when her mother's car was broadside by a lumber truck at Adobe Lane and Camino de Santiago. Her mother Lorna and sister Grace sustained minor injuries. The driver Tomas Martinez was uninjured. Investigation ongoing with no citations issued.
Taos County commissioner Lawrence Gallegos questioned the rehiring of former road superintendent Joe Mike Duran and former planner David Fernandez at the November 13 meeting. He argued the move uses revenue bond funds and noted the two were hired only until December 31 by a newly elected commission.
